Fort Ticonderoga will return to its roots — literally — during its 104th season. The fort, which opens Friday, May 17, will focus on the events of 1755. That’s the year French soldiers began construction of Fort Carillon, today’s Fort Ticonderoga.

A Holocaust survivor, Murray Jaros has seen the worst of humanity. He’s also seen the best. Jaros will speak Thursday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Schroon Lake Central School auditorium at the invitation of the student National Honor Society. The program is free and open to the community.
Bird program set at Crown Point historic site
Banding station to open May 4
The Crown Point State Historic Site will mark its 38th year of bird banding with a special program Saturday, May 4. To celebrate the opening of the Crown Point Bird Banding Association station at the site, the Friends of the Crown Point Historic Site will host Gary Lee, who will present a free program at 1 p.m. in the site’s museum auditorium.

After four years of work, debate and revision, an updated Ticonderoga zoning proposal has been scraped. Faced with withering criticism, the town board voted unanimously to kill the plan — at least for now — at its April meeting.

Deanne Webster finished race before explosions
Deanne Webster expected her first Boston Marathon to be memorable, she just didn’t know it would be tragic. Webster, a 1993 Crown Point Central School graduate, crossed the finished line at the 117th Boston Marathon April 15 before the two terrorist bombs exploded, killing three and injuring more than 180 people. She had just left the finish corral when the attack took place.
